Politician Asks For Messi To Be Banned From Country

Croatia, Serbia and Saudi Arabia have followed the likes of Germany and Senegal in being fined for disciplinary reasons, as revealed in a statement released this week.

Quarter-finalists Croatia were hit with a £43 000 fine (R903 000), the biggest, for the verbal insults Croatian supporters hurled at Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan during the group stage late last month.

The shot-stopper was reportedly born in an ethnic Serbian region of Croatia, with supporters unveiling a banner that mocked the player and his family's fleeing of the area after it was taken over by Croatian forces.

The Serbian FA, meanwhile, were fined £17 000 (R357 000) for hanging a Kosovo flag in their dressing room prior to taking on Brazil on 24 November.

The flag is believed to show Kosovo as part of Serbia, along with the message "we do not surrender".

Finally, FIFA punished Saudi Arabia with a fine of £26 000 (R546 000) for picking up six bookings in their group encounters against Argentina and Mexico, with the statement reading: "The Saudi Arabian Football Association has received two fines of CHF 15,000 for the misconduct of its team (a total of six bookings received by Saudi players) during the FIFA World Cup matches against Argentina and Mexico on 22 November and 30 November, respectively."
