Wenger Aims Sly Dig At Germany After Shock World Cup Exit

Wenger Aims Sly Dig At Germany After Shock World Cup Exit

Legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger seems to have taken some subtle shots at the Germany national team after they were eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Germany caused a stir at the World Cup when, taking their team photo before their opening tournament match, their players covered their mouths in protest of FIFA's ban on the OneLove captain's armbands.

The armband was planned to highlight the need for inclusion and diversity, and after world football's governing body decided to punish teams that donned the rainbow-coloured armband, Die Mannschaft found another way to be vocal.

On the pitch, however, things did not go according to plan for Hansi Flick's side. The game ahead of which they decided to protest, the four-time world champions lost.

Japan's 2-1 victory over Germany would ultimately help condemn the European nation to World Cup elimination at the groups stage for the second success tournament, and while their performances may have been questionable, Wenger seemed to suggest recently that their exit was caused by not focusing solely on football.

"You know, when you go to a World Cup, you know you can't lose the first game," Wenger said when asked about Germany's early exit at the World Cup Technical Study Group, as per Goal.

"The teams who have the experience to perform in tournaments like France and England played well in the first game.

"The teams who were mentally ready, with a mindset to focus on competition, and not the political demonstrations."
