Ka Bo Yellow were the first – and so far, the only – side from Africa to achieve a victory during the first set of fixtures at the global showpiece.
They defeated South Korean giants Ulsan HD 1-0 at the Inter & Co Stadium earlier this week, courtesy of an Iqraam Rayners strike.
While the Capetonian helped Masandawana earn their first-ever win at the competition, it is another Sundowns star who received a nod for inclusion in the best XI for the tournament’s opening round of matches – Divine Lunga.
The Zimbabwean international thwarted numerous attacks coming down the left side of the Sundowns defence, and this resoluteness was a key factor in helping the Tshwane-based side secure a crucial three points.
Despite playing at left-back for the South African champions on the day, Lunga has been placed at right-back in the Club World Cup Team of the Week, which is selected by the tournament’s lead broadcaster, DAZN.
Alongside Lunga in the backline is Real Madrid icon Sergio Ramos, who now plies his trade with Mexican side Monterrey.
