Lorch Pulls Curtain Back On Relationship With Rulani

Wydad Athletic Club star Thembinkosi Lorch has pulled the curtain back on his relationship with coach Rulani Mokwena.

Despite having a South African team present at the FIFA Club World Cup, the Bloemfontein native — alongside Elias Mokwana and Cassius Mailula — will be one of the few players from the country not participating in the global spectacle for the sole representative from the Rainbow Nation, Mamelodi Sundowns.

While he may be donning the famous red and white of the Red Castle in the United States of America, he technically remains a Sundowns player, as he is only on loan with the record Moroccan champions for the duration of the 2025/26 campaign.

He was brought to Casablanca by former Wydad head coach Rulani Mokwena, but the latter’s departure has seemingly not curtailed his prominence within the Wydad side, as he has continued to be a consistent starter for the North African giants in the final stretch of the campaign.

Despite no longer working together at Wydad, however, Lorch has given a glowing review of the South African head coach’s impact on his career.

“I worked with coach Rulani even before Sundowns, I used to play for Pirates where he coached me and when he went to Sundowns, he fetched me from Pirates to Sundowns,” the forward said.

“So I think for me he’s like a brother to me, father figure, friend, every time I had problems I would go to him for advice. I think he made it easier for me to fit well into the team.”
