Lenny Yoro returned from injury and was back in the United starting line-up, as he came in for Victor Lindelöf as the team's only change from the loss to Chelsea on Friday, while Spurs opted to start captain Son Heung-min on the bench.
The game was played at a lively pace in the early stages, with Pape Sarr seeing his shot blocked by Harry Maguire before Amad Diallo fired just wide of Guglielmo Vicario's upright at the other end in the opening 15 minutes.
The fast start did not last for most of the first period as both sides became quite careless with the ball as the first half went on, although the Red Devils were more threatening with Diallo down the right flank.
The North London outfit got the breakthrough in the 41st minutes when Brennan Johnson got ahead of his marker in the six-yard area to turn home a cross from Sarr via a deflection off Luke Shaw at the far post.
The Red Devils dominated possession from the start of the second half as they went in search of the equaliser, but they were finding it tough to carve out any clear-cut chances at Vicario's goal in the opening 15 minutes.
United almost got their equaliser in the 68th minute when Rasmus Hojlund, who had a quiet evening, saw his header brilliantly cleared off the line by Micky van der Ven before Spurs cleared the danger.
That proved to be Hojlund's last involvement as he made way for the returning Joshua Zirkzee while Alejandro Garnacho replaced Mount on the left flank for the final 20 minutes.
The Red Devils were camped in the Spurs for rest of the second half, but Vicario ensured Spurs walked away with the win after producing a superb save in second-half stoppage time to keep out Luke Shaw's towering header.
The North London outfit secure their first trophy since 2008 and will compete in the UEFA Champions League next season.
