Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table after defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 on Saturday evening.
Premier League
Result: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Liverpool
Date: 28 September 2024
Venue: Molineux Stadium
The Reds made two changes from the win over Bournemouth as first choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker returned to the line-up, while Diogo Jota replaced Darwin Nunez, who did score last weekend.
The Reds had to wait until the 11th minute for their first opening at goal, with Mohamed Salah picking out Jota in the box but the Portuguese forward was unable to convert past Sam Johnstone.
The game began to open up thereafter as Matheus Cunha was denied by a fine save from Alisson, while Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was called upon to keep out Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick on 30 minutes.
The Reds should have broken the deadlock five minutes before the halftime break when Andrew Robertson picked out Szoboszlai, who was denied by Johnston at point-blank range.
The visitors got the breakthrough on in first-half stoppage time as defender Ibrahima Konate powered home a header from Jota's cross for his first league goal of the campaign.
Wolves, however, found the equaliser ten minutes in the second half when a mix-up between Konate and Alisson allowed Rayan Ait-Nouri to slot home from close range for his first goal of the season.
Liverpool were afforded the chance to restore their lead on 61 minutes after being awarded a penalty for Nelson Semedo's foul on Jota. Salah stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick to put his side in front.
Arne Slot's men were able to see out the closing stages and deny Wolves any clear-cut openings in the final third, as they will end the weekend top of the table.
