Premier League Report: West Ham United v Liverpool

Premier League

Result: West Ham United 1-3 Liverpool

Date: 31 January 2021

Venue: London Stadium

Mohamed Salah netted a brace to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 victory away to West Ham United, as the side move up to third spot.

Liverpool made three changes, with Nathaniel Phillips, Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi coming in.

In the ninth minute, a delicious cross-field ball by Andrew Robertson found Trent Alexander-Arnold which ended with Gini Wijnaldum firing a first-time attempt over Lukasz Fabianski's bar.

A half chance came for the visitors as a cross was floated into the box and Mo Salah met it but it lacked power and was off-target.

Fabianski was made to work for the first time by Mo Salah's low drive from the edge of the penalty area on the stroke of half-time.

In the 49th minute, Origi made a brilliant break down the left before cutting the ball back for Salah. Cresswell was sleeping initially but recovered just in time to block the Egyptian's effort on goal.

Curtis Jones had only been on the field a matter of seconds but did brilliantly, breaking forward before finding Salah on his right. The Egyptian squared up with Cresswell before shifting the ball onto his left foot and finding the far corner with precision in the 57th minute.

From a West Ham corner, Alexander-Arnold found Shaqiri who was bolting up the left wing before the Swiss player swung in a pinpoint throughball for Salah. The Egyptian still had it all to do but his first touch was exquisite and he dinked it past Fabianski with his second.

In the 84th minute, Firmino played a delightful one-two with Oxlade-Chamberlain before selflessly laying it on a plate for Wijnaldum who couldn't miss.

Craig Dawson pulled one back in the closing stages but it was a mere consolation for the Hammers, as the Reds climb up to third spot while West Ham drop to fifth.
