Liverpool Fail To Secure Community Shield

Crystal Palace clinched the 2025 Community Shield after defeating Liverpool on penalties at Wembley Stadium.

Community Shield

Result: Liverpool 2-2 Crystal Palace

Date: 10 August 2025

Venue: Anfield

Reds manager Arne Slot gave debuts to Florian Wirtz, HUgo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, while Palace's signings Walter Benitez and Borna Sosa only started on the bench.

Ektike made the perfect start as he collected a pass from fellow signing Wirtz on the edge of the area before firing past Dean Henderson with low finish after just four minutes.

Palace, however, were awarded a penalty on 17 minutes following Virgil van Dijk's foul on Ismaila Sarr, which allowed Jean-Philippe Mateta to convert from the penalty spot.

The joy from the Eagles did not last long as the Reds restored their lead three minutes later as Frimpong got himself a debut goal as his cross-cum-shot sailed over the Palace goalkeeper.

The game was quite open in the latter stages of the first half, with Palace going closest as Will Hughes squandered a good chance on the edge of the box as Liverpool did look vulnerable in the defence.

Palace were a lot more attacking in the second period as Liverpool needed the heroics of goalkeeper Alisson Becker to keep out efforts from Eberechi Eze and Chris Richards.

The FA Cup winners got their reward in the 77th minute as Adam Wharton turned provider to play in Sarr, who managed to slot into the far corner despite the best efforts from the advancing Alisson.

Palace had a chance to win the game late on as Justin DeVenny unleashed a first-time strike from just outside the box that sailed inches wide, sending the clash to a penalty shoot-out.

It was the Eagles who held their nerve to triumph 3-2 in the shoot-out after Henderson saved penalties from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliot.
