For the third game in a row, Dortmund coach Lucien Favre opted to leave Jadon Sancho on the bench as Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt continued alongside Erling Haaland.

Haaland nearly gifted the home side the lead inside the first minute but the striker's effort was cleared off the line by Jerome Boateng before Hazard's goal was ruled out for offside in a lively opening 10 minutes.

Bayern, meanwhile, had to wait until the 19th minute for the first meaningful opening as Kingsley Coman picked out Serge Gnabry, who saw his effort cleared off the line by Lukasz Pisczczek.

It was an end-to-end affair from the onset but the Bavarians took control in the final 10 minutes of the first half, eagerly pushing for the break though.

The opening goal of the contest went the way of the visitors as Joshua Kimmich found the back of the net with a delightful chip over Roman Burki three minutes before the break.

Favre responded with a double change at the start of the second half, as Sancho and Emre Can replace Thomas Delaney and Julian Brandt in the attack.

Dortmund were presented with a golden chance to level matters just before the hour mark when Boateng's slip allowed Haaland a sight at goal in the box, but the striker could only fire his effort off the Bayern defender.

The home side's hopes of securing an equaliser suffered a setback as Haaland picked up a knock after stretching for Sancho's cross and was replaced by Gio Reyna for the final 17 minutes.

Robert Lewandowski went close to putting Dortmund out of their misery with seven minutes left on the clock, but the Bayern striker's curling effort deflected off Mats Hummels and hit the upright.

Nevertheless, Kimmich's impressive first-half strike proved to be the difference as the reigning league champions move seven points clear of second-place Dortmund.
