The White Knights have been linked with the Bafana Bafana star for almost the entirety of 2025. At the beginning of the year, when rumblings of a likely departure from Al Ahly began to emerge, their arch-rivals were touted as a possible destination for the Witbank native.
Ultimately, the 31-year-old would leave the Club of the Century and join Qatar SC in the Qatari Stars League. After six months in Doha, however, Tau has left the club and is now a free agent. Consequently, links to Zamalek have resurfaced.
It is believed that the five-time African champions are keen on landing the South African, but have hit a major stumbling block regarding the forward’s wages.
This is according to Al Ahly legend turned broadcaster Ahmed Shobair, who said, as per Al Masry Al Youm:
"Regarding Percy Tau, he is also an important player, but his salary with Al Ahly, Qatar, or when he was in Europe was very expensive. There was talk that some clubs in South Africa needed him, but the clubs in the region pay the most, and therefore South Africa is few compared to Egyptian clubs, or North Africa.”

"Percy Tau has no problem, of course, because he is a professional player, but his numbers are too high for Zamalek. However, the club does not want to include older players, and therefore his chances may be the least with Zamalek, not because of his level, but because of money and age."
