After leaving Moroccan side Wydad AC toward the end of last season, Mokwena is now a free agent and has been considered a target for many sides in South Africa and Africa.
Multiple reports suggest that Orlando Pirates have an interest in Mokwena, while there has also been interest from sides in North Africa.
Mokwena had previously revealed that he no longer considered the Zamalek role as he did not want to compete for the same role as his mentor Pitso Mosimane.
According to SABC Sport, Mokwena is now leading the way to take over after Pyramids officials reportedly flew to South Africa to speak with the ex-Wydad coach.
Mokwena admitted he was not looking to stay out of the job for too long and would "consider any offer on the table."
Pyramids' pursuit of Mokwena comes after the side recently won the CAF Champions League against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Croatian Krunoslav Jurcic is in charge of the side but has remained silent on whether or not he would continue going into next season.
