Following Mokwena's departure from Moroccan club Wydad AC earlier this month, he has continually been linked with a move to a new side ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Previous reports suggest that the Johannesburg-born coach could make the switch to the Egyptian Premier League with Zamalek, who is supposedly pursuing a new coach.
However, sources from Yallakora said the White Castle has reportedly responded to the links to the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician and revealed his name has come up in discussions.
The source added that the former Wydad boss was not a priority for the team's planning committee but was shortlisted as one of the names since he is no longer managing a club.
According to Dostor, journalist Amir Hisham revealed that Zamalek officials are hesitant to appoint Mokwena following his stint with the Moroccan side.
"Zamalek negotiated with Mokwena, and some within the club are convinced that the coach is a 'good project' for the team, including a prominent member of the planning committee, while others believe that the coach failed with Wydad Casablanca, and Zamalek is not a 'test bed'," Hisham said.
He continued: "Mokwena succeeded with Sundowns, but he failed with Wydad Casablanca, and things are divided at Zamalek, because 'there is more than one captain in a boat,' as they say, and there is a conflict at work, with each official going in a different direction."
