A France international and former Liverpool star has revealed that he was in talks with Wydad Athletic Club about joining them ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Prior to the commencement of the global spectacle earlier this month, a number of high-profile players were linked with a move to the record Moroccan champions.
Stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Hakim Ziyech were believed to be of interest to the North African giants, with club president Hicham Ait Menna recently confirming that talks had taken place to try and tempt the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to Casablanca.
Unfortunately, however, they were unable to sign the forward — or any superstar talents, for that matter — but another former top-flight player has now revealed he was in negotiations to sign for the three-time CAF Champions League winners just before the ongoing Club World Cup.
Mamadou Sakho, who has played for the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Crystal Palace, and earned 29 caps for Les Bleus, is currently in search of a new club after leaving Georgian side Torpedo Kutaisi at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
Wydad had hoped to offer him a lifeline — and a chance to compete on club football’s biggest stage — but instead, he chose to attend the tournament in a different capacity.

"Wydad contacted me last April to play in the Club World Cup with them, but after thinking about it, I preferred to join DAZN as a consultant,” the Paris native said, as per Le 360 Sport.
