McCarthy was appointed as Harambee Stars coach in March and has overseen just two games so far, drawing 3-3 with The Gambia before succumbing 2-1 to Gabon.
While McCrthy's pedigree as a player was never in jeopardy, his appointment was reportedly frowned upon by Baraza, who felt a Kenyan should have been given the job, according to Pulse Sports Kenya.
"First of all, before he (McCarthy) was handed the reins, I was against the appointment. I condemned it and said he was not the right fit,” Baraza stated.
He added: "I was for a local coach who could revolutionize the team past 'friendships' in selection. That is where we go wrong as Kenyans. Give Kenyans the job to do, they have the capabilities."
Baraza, currently in charge of Dodoma Jiji coach wanted a local coach to lead the team at the African Nations Championships (CHAN) but has since changed his stance towards the former Blackburn Rovers striker.
"I prayed that they give the role to a local coach. To entrust a local coach for this CHAN,” he said. "Now that he is in charge, let’s give him time. The results will come. I know he will do well."
The former Tusker FC coach said it was important for the rest of the country to get behind McCarthy ahead of the competition.

"We have to give him support—myself included—because he has been handed the reins,” he said.
