Mokwena has been without a job since parting ways with Wydad AC earlier this month and he has garnered significant interest from Egypt as Zamalek has reportedly tipped him as one of their options for their new coach.
Previous reports suggested that the Zamalek board of directors was split on his appointment, as some revealed he was one of the names considered, while others were not convinced following his unsuccessful stint at Wydad.
According to Al-Shorouk, Ahmed Shobair was less open to the idea of the White Castle appointing the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns tactician.
"The truth is, Rulani Mokwena’s name has been floated around in the past couple of days as a candidate to coach Zamalek," Ahmed Shobair said.
He added: "But based on what exactly? Can someone give me a reason? He only won the African Football League with Mamelodi Sundowns and failed to achieve any success with Wydad Casablanca."
The player-turned-journalist also speculated that the Mokwena rumours were nothing more than 'agent talk' and that Zamalek was not considering him as a serious option.
"In my opinion, this is just agent talk. They’re putting his name out there — it happens all the time. But I don’t think Zamalek officials are seriously considering Mokwena," Shobeir said.
Ahmed Shobair questioned why Zamalek has not considered hiring interim coach Ayman El-Ramady as a permanent option. and said the White Knight has often turned to Egyptian coaches instead of foreign names.

"Let me ask a question. You hired Ayman El-Romadi, and he’s coached three matches — drew two and won one. Against Petrojet, you could finally see his impact on the team. You brought him in specifically for the Egypt Cup final against Pyramids. So what if El-Romadi wins the cup? Will he stay? You’ll hear people say no — why? Because he’s Egyptian? Come on. Your greatest achievements came under Egyptian coaches like Mahmoud Abouregaila and Mahmoud El-Gohary," he said.
