The former Cape Town City boss has overseen two games so far as Kenya boss and is chasing his first victory following a 3-3 draw with Gambia and a 2-1 loss to Gabon.

In an interview with SportyTV, the ex-FC Porto striker discussed the progress Bafana Bafana has made under Hugo Broos' guidance and revealed the key to improving the quality of football for countries such as Kenya.

"I think South Africa is slowly but surely getting on the right path because they gave Hugo Broos time to build the squad,” he said.

McCarthy continued: "You can see now that there is that continuity and consistency within the national team. So slowly but surely, they started to climb the ladder again because they had good preparations."

The former AmaZulu coach said South Africa's new period of success was down to stability but admitted there was a bigger issue to address.

"They had a coach who has been there for more than three years now," he said. "He was able to implement his philosophy to the team, and I think South Africa is a little bit stable.”

He added: "They are not there yet because I still think within the federation that’s the biggest problem still lying. When you are forever shifting where the team camps, there is no base for the team to come and camp on."

McCarthy praised North African sides such as Egypt and Morocco for implementing a team base, saying other countries should follow suit.

"So I think that’s where we had to lay our foundations," he concluded.
