In news that has sent shockwaves through African football, Orlando Pirates’ outgoing Spanish head coach appears poised to join the Club of the Century. The Vigo-born tactician first arrived on the continent in 2022 to take the reins at the Buccaneers and has since led them to multiple domestic honours.
This season, the 47-year-old has been highly competitive across all fronts, pushing Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership title race, reaching the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, advancing to the Nedbank Cup final, and lifting the MTN8 trophy.
Despite assembling a strong and competitive squad, Riveiro has decided to bring his time in Soweto to an end, with all indications suggesting his next destination is Cairo.
Al Ahly, meanwhile, have endured an underwhelming campaign by their high standards. While they currently lead the Egyptian Premier League by two points, they lost the Egyptian Cup to Pyramids FC and were eliminated from the CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns.
Shortly after their continental exit, the club sacked Swiss manager Marcel Koller and began the search for a new head coach. After considering a number of candidates, it now appears Riveiro is the preferred successor.
