The story

Retired goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo has spoken kindly of his relationship with Itumeleng Khune during his time at Chiefs, the prominent years of his decade-long career.

The former shot-stopper's promising career was cut short at the age of 29 due to an ankle injury, with Khuzwayo hanging up his boots while at Orlando Pirates, following a high-profile transfer from their fierce rivals, Amakhosi.

The former Bafana Bafana international made the move to the Buccaneers in July 2018, but retired in 2019 without making an official appearance for the club.

During his time at the Glamour Boys, Khuzwayo primarily served as a backup to former captain Itumeleng Khune, leading him to seek a new challenge by shockingly leaving Amakhosi.

Speaking to his ex-teammate at club and international football, Tsepo Masilela and Peter du Toit on the SoccerBeat podcast, Khuzwayo had plenty of good things to say about Khune and the competition between the two of them.

"We used to have this competitions with him, a healthy competition. I would say, 'I know I can beat you Itu,' and he would say, 'Nami, angikusabi futhi.' (I'm also not afraid of you). If I catch five balls, he would want to catch six, if I dived six times, he would dive eight times," shared the 34-year-old.

"Each and every training session, it was more challenging. Both of us challenging each other every training session. Sometimes, we would practice penalties, where If I win the penalty shoot-out, he would buy me R55 airtime, it was more of a great competition between him and I, every training session," added Brilliant.
