Makhaula said it came as a surprise to him, although he had been talking to his agent about a move away from AmaZulu.
"It really came as a surprise.
"My agent called me a bit late and told me that I was going (to Pirates). I asked him what he meant and he said I was going to join Orlando Pirates. I didn't believe it and I couldn't sleep," the midfielder said, speaking to the Siya crew on the sidelines of the Soweto Derby press conference held in Midrand.
"I kept on watching TV and many people were calling me on my phone so much so that I had to switch off my phone. But I was happy because I always had wanted to play for this club," the former Free State Stars midfielder said.
The 33-year-old, who previously plied his trade at Free State Stars and Highlands Park, added that he received messages of congratulations from other players like Oupa Manyisa, Donald Ace Khuse and his current teammate Ben Motswari.
"My family and friends called to congratulate me and also other former Pirates players like Ace Khuse and Oupa Manyisa also congratulated me. Its good to be here now," he concluded.
