After facing intense competition from several top performers across the Betway Premiership this past season, it is Captain Ama2000 who has emerged victorious in the Player of the Season honours. The 20-year-old took a massive step forward in his development during the recently concluded campaign, playing a starring role in the Buccaneers’ title charge by contributing five goals and eight assists.

The Bafana Bafana international edged out Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who also enjoyed a stellar campaign in the South African top flight, scoring 16 goals and providing nine assists. But the readers have spoken — and chosen Mofokeng as the standout player of the season with the Pirates star having 299 more votes.

Kaizer Chiefs and South African football legend Doctor Khumalo has also been extremely impressed with the youngster’s performance. Speaking to Soccer Laduma, he said:

“You also have Relebohile Mofokeng, as young as he is, who was unbelievable for Orlando Pirates this season. The boy played like a seasoned campaigner because he wasn’t just a member of the squad but one of the most important and reliable players in the team.

“To see a young player like him performing the way he did was just out of this world. His maturity, hard work and selflessness was amazing to watch from a player his age. It came as no surprise that coach Hugo Broos couldn’t overlook him and the boy repaid the faith shown in him, just as he did at club level, by grabbing the opportunity with both hands.

“This is one of the most exciting players in our league and even the opposition supporters love and appreciate him. He helped Pirates win the MTN8, but unfortunately, just like his coach, he couldn’t win the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Champions League, which would have taken their season to another level. His performances and dedication to the club were just unbelievable!”
