Speaking to the Siya crew after the announcement was made, Mofokeng’s father admitted that while the family is proud of the 20-year-old's individual recognition, he couldn’t help but feel that more could have been achieved on the collective front.
“Yeah, we are trying as a family and to be honest, this morning when we saw the news, we were so excited,” Sechaba told Soccer Laduma.
“But part of me still feels like he failed us, you know. I even told him last week before he went to the national team that if you are there amongst the nominees, it’s fine. But what you were supposed to have achieved, you never achieved.”
Across all competitions this season, Mofokeng made a total of 49 appearances for Orlando Pirates, scoring 12 goals and registering 15 assists. His contributions came consistently in the Betway Premiership, CAF Champions League, and domestic cup competitions.
He netted five goals apiece in both the league and the CAF Champions League, while also adding two strikes in the MTN8. Notably, his creative influence was evident with eight league assists and another seven across cup matches.
These numbers are remarkable for a player of his age and further justify his selection as Soccer Laduma’s Player of the Season, showcasing his well-rounded impact throughout the campaign.
However, his father’s reflection shows that in the Mofokeng household, the standard is set higher, not just for personal accolades, but for team success.
“The team, what did he achieve this season?” Sechaba asked.
“Only one cup. No Nedbank, no CAF Champions League, no League. At least if he managed two out of two, it would be great. I told him, you failed us, but let’s celebrate what we have.”
