In anticipation of this week’s 1427th edition of Soccer Laduma, we preview some of the features and interviews included. The latest edition will be available at your nearest outlet on Thursday, 5th June 2025.
LUCKY LEKGWATHI
Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi was more than just a leader on the pitch, he was a symbol of resilience, dedication, and winning mentality. Today, even in retirement, his voice continues to carry weight among the Buccaneers faithful. With the 2024/25 season wrapped up, Lekgwathi spoke with Soccer Laduma to give readers an honest and insightful assessment of Pirates’ campaign. The season had its highs – like the MTN8 triumph – and its painful lows, including the Nedbank Cup final loss to Kaizer Chiefs and the departure of head coach Jose Riveiro. Lekgwathi unpacks all of it: the tactical missteps, the rise of young talent, the depth of the squad, and his personal hopes for the club’s future.
MFUNDO VILAKAZI
Last month, South Africans waited at OR Tambo International Airport in anticipation of the national U20 team’s arrival from Egypt, where they won the Africa Cup of Nations. Among the crowd, the family of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi waited in excitement to see their superstar who was part of a team that made history. Vilakazi has had some difficult moments with Amakhosi last season, but there is a lot to smile about now after winning a continental title. At the airport, Soccer Laduma interviewed Vilakazi’s mother, Lindiwe, about her son’s historic achievement and his childhood experiences.
SIYA SPECIAL
In June 2022, Mamelodi Sundowns made one of their boldest backroom acquisitions yet by appointing Danish football mind Flemming Berg as the club’s new Sporting Director. Berg was handed a clear mandate: improve the club’s developmental structure, enhance its football methodology, and create a streamlined pathway for academy players to reach the first team or move abroad. Nearly three years into his tenure at Chloorkop, the Siya crew has taken a closer look at the changes Berg has overseen, the successes he has helped engineer, the missteps that have emerged, and the growing sentiment that he should now be held more accountable for both the good and the bad.

Ebson “Sugar” Muguyo
Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Ebson “Sugar” Muguyo became the first player to score a hat-trick in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates when he smashed three past Patson Banda in 1975. A fearsome striker with booming shots, Muguyo arrived in Johannesburg from Bulawayo at the recommendation of the late Ewert Nene. That same night, he was drafted into the Chiefs team where he played an instrumental role in their cup victory. In this interview with Soccer Laduma, the legendary Zimbabwean reveals a fascinating secret that many would probably find unbelievable.
International Feature
Having recently parted ways with Saudi Arabian side Al-Faisaly FC, Spanish coach Pablo Franco Martin has been linked with several teams, including Soweto giants Orlando Pirates. Martin ended his relationship with the Saudi First Division League side after helping them survive relegation and is now considering opportunities across various continents. In an interview with Soccer Laduma, the Madrid-born tactician reflected on his time in the Gulf region as well as his previous stint in South Africa, where he spent at least 14 months at the helm of AmaZulu FC.
