CAFCL Top 10 Goalscorers: Mofokeng, Nkota & Rayners!

With the CAF Champions League now officially concluded, here are the top 10 most prolific players from the competition, and present on the list are South Africans such as Relebohile Mofokeng and Iqraam Rayners.

This past weekend, Pyramids FC were crowned champions of Africa for the first time in their history as they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at home, culminating in a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The first goal of the second leg was scored by Democratic Republic of Congo international Fiston Mayele, who capitalised on a poor Grant Kekana clearance.

The 30-year-old has been outstanding in front of goal throughout the competition and has finished top of the goalscoring charts with nine. Another South African side familiar with his prowess is Orlando Pirates — the former Young Africans talisman scored two goals against the Sea Robbers in their second leg encounter in Cairo.

Pyramids won 3-2 on that occasion in the Egyptian capital, but two South African youngsters proved a thorn in the side of Krunoslav Jurcic’s charges, as Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota scored for the Buccaneers.

Both contributed crucial goals for the Betway Premiership giants in the competition, including in hostile North African stadiums such as CR Belouizdad, Al Ahly, and most recently, Pyramids FC.

Mofokeng ended with five Champions League goals — the fourth-highest tally in Africa’s premier club competition, while Nkota finished with four goals. Another South African who managed to crack the top 10 is Iqraam Rayners. Like Mayele, the Capetonian scored in the Champions League final second leg, taking his tally to four goals.
