ABC Motsepe League Playoff Report: Apollo 1-1 Shining Stars 24 July 2014

Mpumalanga champions, Apollo, who only began their Motsepe Play-Off campaign on Wednesday evening with a 1-1 draw over Shining Stars, caused a huge upset on day three of the competition by overpowering Group A log leaders, Cape Town Stars, 2-0 on the smaller King Zwelithini B field. Star of the match was the Apollo goalkeeper but Stars were unhappy with the size of the field as well as certain refereeing decisions after the initial official was switched. "There were two clear penalties," a Cape Town source told Soccer-Laduma. "And the ref gave them an off-side goal after over ruling the linesman. But that's football, this loss will make us stronger for the next game." This result has left Apollo just two points behind Stars but with a game in hand. On Friday, both teams will be going out for maximum points with Cape Town facing the North West's Shining Stars in their final match, while Apollo will be hoping to get the better of the Free State's Sibanye Golden Stars who have just lost 2-1 to Angavu Stars. Should Cape Town All Stars lose that important game then all eyes will be focussed on Saturday's final Group A clash between Angavu and Apollo, where the winner will be promoted to the National First Division. In Group B, Steach United beat Natal United 2-0 and must grab all three points from Magesi on Friday to have any chance of reaching the Final.
