Baroka Not Taking Action For Referee’s Penalty Controversy

The controversial penalty decision in the game between Baroka and Golden Arrows has not deterred the Limpopo outfit in their attempts to move away from the PSL’s relegation zone.

Read – FIFA Laws: Baroka Penalty Should Have Been Retaken

On Saturday, Baroka were unlucky not to have been given a chance by the match referee, Victor Gomes, to retake their penalty kick against Arrows.

With the scoreboard reading 3-2 in favour of Arrows in that game, Baroka thought they had an opportunity to equalise and possibly get a valuable point when they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time.

Richard Matloga scored the resultant penalty but his effort was ruled out by Gomes after a Baroka player had entered the box before the ball crossed the line, although the FIFA Laws of the Game state that a retake should have been ordered instead of continuing with play like the referee did on the weekend.

Baroka’s CEO, Morgan Mammila, says the fight against relegation is an ongoing one for the Limpopo outfit, without focusing much on what happened in that game.

“Obviously, that won’t change anything now. It there was a technical committee to look at the errors of the referees, we would do that (challenge referee’s decision). In South Africa the rules are clear, you can’t challenge the decisions of the referees. SAFA only consider that if there is a misidentification of a player. For other things, I don’t think there is that authority to do that.

“Remember that the rules are there and there are new rules in place. Obviously, everyone interprets the rules in his own way. Surely, Mr Gomes came not to rob us. He interpreted the rules but surely he didn’t understand how that one works. We were unlucky. We were lucky to get a penalty but unlucky to have the other decision against us.

“There are two more games to play. It’s not the end of the world. We won’t let people down,” said Mammila.

In other news from Baroka, the club has confirmed that it will distribute 10 000 free match tickets to the fans that will be attending their game against Highlands Park on Wednesday.

Baroka FC has taken a decision to issue and distribute 10 000 free tickets to the supporters and football lovers who will be attending their game against Highlands Park on Wednesday,17 May at 19h30.

The game will be played at Peter Mokaba Stadium. This is a gesture of appreciation towards our supporters and their families for the support they gave the team throughout the season. We urge our supporters to bring their families for that occasion. This is our last home game of the season and it is of paramount importance that supporters come in numbers to cheer the boys towards achieving the goal of staying in the PSL.
