United Stunned By Baggies

Manchester United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

It marked a continuation of their inconsistent form of late, as well as back-to-back league defeats following their defeat away to Manchester City – though they had beaten Liverpool 1-0 in the Captial One Cup in midweek.

For the Baggies, it was their first win at United since the 1970's as well as their first win of any kind over the Red Devils since 1984.

Javier Hernandez had the first real chance of the game in the 17th minute when Anderson found Nani on the left and his curling cross was just inches from the boot of the Mexican.

Wayne Rooney should have done better with a cross from Nani in the 24th minute but he sent his header straight at the goalkeeper before Berahino nodded inches wide at the other end.

Rooney blasted another attempt just over while Shinji Kagawa picked out Anderson in the 34th minute with a superb cross which the Brazilian nodded against the crossbar - though a poor offside call would have prevented a goal had it gone in.

West Brom looked a threat at times and Stephane Sessegnon fluffed a great chance late in the half when he blasted wide and over at the far post when it seemed easier to score.

The opening goal finally arrived nine minutes after the break as Morgan Amalfitano picked the ball up on the wing, powered his way past Adnan Januzaj and through Rio Ferdinand before dinking a calm finish over David De Gea.

United responded three minutes later though with a curling Rooney free-kick evading everybody and resting inside the far post.

Jonas Olsson hit the crossbar with a header in the 61st minute while Amalfitano's powerful shot was dealt with by De Gea soon after.

Their pressure would pay off moments later though as Berahino drilled a superb finish into the bottom corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The hosts looked for a way back into the game but Januzaj and Michal Carrick couldn't beat the goalkeeper while Marouane Fellaini saw his sliding finish ruled out correctly by the offside flag as West Brom held on for a memorable win.
