Orlando Pirates’ pre-season tour of Spain is already proving to be valuable preparation for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign, according to former striker James Mothibi, who believes the overseas trip is delivering the right kind of test for the Buccaneers.
The Soweto giants are currently based in Marbella, where they have already played two friendly matches – a 2-0 defeat to English side Bolton Wanderers, followed by a 1-1 draw against Cypriot outfit Pafos FC.

Despite the mixed results, Mothibi insists it’s not the scorelines that matter, but rather the level of competition and the physical conditioning the players are being exposed to during pre-season.
“Look, I think this thing for Pirates to go overseas, it’s working,” Mothibi told the Siya crew exclusively.
“We are not going overseas to go and enjoy on beaches and restaurants. No, we go there to play against teams that are very competitive.”
Mothibi praised the intensity and tactical structure of Pirates’ opponents, saying the friendlies so far have offered the right type of challenge.
“You could see how the teams press and how they allow play to go on. These are teams that are highly tactical. I don’t care if they play in the level of ABC Motsepe League or the NFD there – the most important thing is your preparation.”
The former Bucs striker went on to emphasise that the true value of pre-season lies in building match fitness, squad cohesion, and endurance – not chasing results.
“Pre-season is for preparation. Sometimes you play strong teams, sometimes weaker ones. But the fact is, it’s about preparation. The results in pre-season, for me, are not important. What counts is game time, pressure situations, and endurance.”
Mothibi concluded by reminding the squad of the pride and weight that comes with representing the Orlando Pirates badge.

“This is a brand that you need to respect. If you respect the brand, the brand will respect you back. Forget the negativity. Focus on the love from the supporters.”
With more fixtures expected in Marbella before their return to Mzansi, Pirates will be hoping to continue building sharpness and synergy as they prepare for a crucial season ahead.
