Pirates Among 30-Team Elite Training Camp

Orlando Pirates have broken new ground in their preparation for the 2023/24 season as they are the only African side to be included in a 30-team international training camp that includes clubs from around the world. 

Pirates have already announced the details of the second phase of their pre-season tour in Spain which is head coach Jose Riveiro's native country.

The Buccaneers are scheduled to stay in the Marbella Football Centre (MFC) for 10 days from 9 July and will play three friendly matches, against Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv, Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle and newly promoted La Liga side UD Las Palmas.

The Soweto giants, at Marbella, will be in the company of other clubs from around the world, including those from England, Scotland and Qatar. 

English clubs represented at the venue are Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Stoke City (Championship). Then there are La Liga teams Cadiz, Espanyol (relegated last season), the Spanish Women's team, in preparation for the FIFA Women's World Cup and Chelsea's U18 side, are more of the notable names that will take part in the 30-team international training camp, where teams will be playing a few games each.

"Spain, France, England, Scotland, Qatar, South Africa, Ecuador and Israel are the countries that will visit us to lay the foundations that physically and technically will mark the future of their football year," MFC announced on their official website. 

"Particularly relevant are the concentrations of the Spanish Women's National Team (on their way to the World Cup to be held this summer in Australia and New Zealand), Las Palmas FC, Espanyol RCD, Cadiz, UD Almeria, Alaves, Albacete, AFC Bournemouth, Stoke City, Heart of Midlothian FC, Hibernian FC, Qatar Sports Club, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Chelsea U-18. 

"MFC will offer these teams the hallmarks of all its centres: first class facilities, pitches in excellent condition, an incomparable climate and a varied and exquisite quality hotel infrastructure."
