Wydad Casablanca are facing an uphill battle to retain the services of Thembinkosi Lorch, as the Moroccan giants scramble to negotiate a permanent deal with Mamelodi Sundowns while overseas interest in the winger intensifies.

Lorch’s loan spell in Casablanca is set to expire on 31 July 2025, and despite Wydad’s strong desire to keep him, the absence of a buyout clause in the agreement has left them in a vulnerable position.
His loan stint has not only reignited his career, but also placed him firmly in the shop window, thanks in large part to a standout showing at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The 31-year-old attacker turned heads with his commanding performances in Morocco’s colours, particularly during Wydad’s clash against Juventus, where he scored and was named among the leading players of the match.
That display, coupled with his consistency since joining the Moroccan outfit, has reportedly sparked renewed interest from clubs abroad, particularly in the Middle East and parts of Europe.
Sources close to the Casablanca club have indicated that negotiations with Mamelodi Sundowns are ongoing, but have proven complex. Unlike fellow South African Cassius Mailula, whose loan deal includes a purchase clause, Lorch’s agreement offers no guarantees, leaving Sundowns with full control over his next step.
Wydad coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem is believed to be eager to retain Lorch’s services, having seen the Bloemfontein native thrive in a more expressive role on the flanks. Wydad's top brass are said to be personally involved in discussions with Sundowns to strike a deal before Lorch’s rising stock attracts formal bids from foreign suitors.
Adding to the pressure is the fact that Wydad are undergoing a period of significant transition, both in terms of personnel and technical direction. With CAF competition qualification secured, retaining top talent like Lorch is seen as key to building continuity and stability for the season ahead.
Lorch’s revival under both former Wydad coach Rulani Mokwena and current boss Benhachem has seen him shed the doubts that lingered during his latter stages at Orlando Pirates and early days at Sundowns.
In Casablanca, he’s found rhythm, confidence, and most importantly, consistency.
While Wydad remain determined to keep him, Sundowns may opt to cash in on the renewed international interest or even reintegrate Lorch into their squad following his impressive campaign.
