Bafana 'Keeper Shines As SuperSport Eliminate CT City

SuperSport United advanced to the Nedbank Cup last 16 after defeating Cape Town City on penalties on Tuesday evening.

Nedbank Cup Last 32

Result: SuperSport United 1-1 Cape Town City (SSU won 3-1 on penalties)

Date: 20 February 2024

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

City coach Eric Tinkler recalled Taahir Goedeman and Thamsanqa Mkhize, while new signing Khanya Leshabela was named on the bench. SuperSport, meanwhile, were boosted by the return of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.

Both sides were eager to get past the first round after they were both eliminated at this stage last season, although SuperSport were knocked by third division side Dondol Stars.

The game was played at a lively pace in the early stages, but it was the home side who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute coutesy of a strike from the highly-rated Shandre Campbell.

SuperSport went in search of a second goal and were nearly rewarded ten minutes before the break, but City goalkeeper Darren Keet produced a fine save to keep out Etiosa Ighodaro's header.

However, City did pull themselves level on the stroke of halftime as Khanyisa Mayo made it two goals in as many games by firing past Goss. The Citizens forward has now scored nine goal across all competitions.

Mayo almost added to that tally after the hour mark as his initial strike was cleared off the line, while the follow-up effort with his head crashed against the frame of the goal.

Tinkler responded with a double change for the final 20 minute, as Leshabela came on for his debut in place of Jaedin Rhodes while Jo Paciencia came on for Luyolo Slatsha.

Despite the changes from both sides late in the second period, neither were able to find the winning goal, sending the game to another 30 minutes of extra-time.

However, both City and SuperSport ran out of legs in extra-time as none of them were able to carve out another serious opening, which forced the clash to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

It  was the home side who triumphed in the shoot-out after Goss pulled off three saves to allow Siyanda Xulu to convert the winning spot-kick.
