Chiefs Keeping Prestige Afloat With Overseas Deals?

Chiefs Keeping Prestige Afloat With Overseas Deals?

The recent jump in the number of players sold by Kaizer Chiefs could wrestle back the prestige of playing for and balance the books of Amakhosi amid struggles on the pitch.

Chiefs have always been arguably the preferred destination of players at other clubs in the PSL over the years but the success of Mamelodi Sundowns since 2014, combined with their financial muscle, has seen them pip the Glamour Boys for the best players in the country.

Financial rewards are normally at the top of the agenda for players joining big teams but the ambitions of playing overseas are also high on boxes every footballer wants to tick.

Amakhosi have shown willingness to let their players pursue greener pastures abroad in spite of challenges on the pitch, after they recently transferred Thatayaone Ditlhokwe to Libyan outfit Al-Ittihad.

Even though Chiefs have not won a trophy in almost a decade, the sale of Njabulo Blom and Siyabonga Ngezana to Major League Soccer club St. Louis City and Romanian giants FC SB separated by only six months in 2023, would have gone a long way in the cash injection into the club's coffers.

The Glamour Boys also have a sell on clause on Ngezana's contract, with a sell-on fee of 10%, which means they could get a minimum of R19,3 million, should the release clause of their academy graduate of around €10 million (R193 m) be met by his suitors.

Chiefs also made a handsome figure in selling Teenage Hadebe to Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor in July 2019.

In the last decade Amakhosi have sold one player short of Sundowns' total of five big international outgoing transfers.

The Brazilians have concluded the overseas transfers of Keagan Dolly and Percy Tau within six months between 2017 and 2018 to Montpellier and Brighton and Hove Albion respectively.

Masandawana also waved goodbye to Cassius Mailula after MLS side Toronto came knocking in July 2023 while in the last one and a half seasons, they have successfully negotiated the transfers of Junior Mendieta and Rushine De Reuck (on loan), to Greek side Volos and Israeli outfit Maccabi Petah Tikoa respectively.

Orlando Pirates have only made two outgoing transfers internationally in the last ten years, after Lyle Foster was signed by Monaco in January 2019 and Marshall Munetsi was acquired by Stade Reims six months later.
