Chiefs Close To D-Day For Portugal-Based Defender

Chiefs Close To D-Day For Portugal-Based Defender

ALVERCA, PORTUGAL - APRIL 6: Nkanyiso Shinga of FC Alverca in action during the Liga Portugal 2 Meu Super match between FC Alverca and SL Benfica B at Estadio FC Alverca on April 6

Kaizer Chiefs are set to land a Europe-based defender as he is believed to be reaching the end of his contract after attracting interest from Naturena.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Amakhosi are interested in a Portugal-based defender, and now they have the chance to land him without a signing fee.

An insider with European football connections has indicated that Chiefs have a chance to sign Nkanyiso Shinga on a free transfer as his contract with FC Alverca is set to run out on 30 June.

"The club is believed to be waiting for this month-end when Nkanyiso (Shinga) is expected to be a free agent and that's what the team is hoping on. They are really happy with what they have seen in him and the free agent part could work to Chiefs' advantage and they are apparently working on that," the source told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile, an insider close to Naturena with knowledge of positional priorities stated that Chiefs are determined to get a left-back before they leave for the Netherlands.

"Yes, the left back and the striking department are the priorities for the club to sign at the moment and that's why their main focus is looking at which players they can get and there are a few they have listed and Nkanyiso Shinga is one of those on the wanted list," the insider told the Siya crew.

The former KZN Academy graduate is on the books of Portuguese side FC Alverca, and last season he featured in many games.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment on the situation but there was no response at the time of preparing this story.

The potential acquisition of Shinga represents an intriguing opportunity for Chiefs to secure a defender who has developed his game in European football. Having spent time in Portugal, the left-back would bring different tactical experiences and technical qualities compared to locally-based options.

The free transfer aspect also aligns with smart financial management, allowing Chiefs to potentially allocate more resources to other priority positions like the striker. With the Netherlands trip approaching, securing Shinga would check an important box in Nabi's pre-season preparations.
