There was a debutant for Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend in their 2-2 draw away to Golden Arrows as the DStv Premiership made its return.
Word reaching the Siya crew is that coach Gavin Hunt has been very impressed with young Darrel Matsheke, who was promoted to the senior team last season by Ernst Middendorp along with Keletso Sifama and Lebo Lesako.
The trio had caught the eye of the German mentor while playing for the reserve side in the Multichoice Diski Challenge under Arthur Zwane.
— Asidlali (@Asidlali) November 16, 2019Zwane is now Hunt's assistant coach at Chiefs and would have no doubt been instrumental in helping Matsheke adapt to the demands of the senior team.
The young Matsheke came on with eight minutes to go for Nkosingiphile Ngcobo on Saturday afternoon against Arrows and slotted into a defensive midfielder role, but it's understood he is quite versatile.
On using him against Arrows, Hunt said after the game: "I threw him in, he's got legs and it is what we need. He is determined and you know, maybe we can make something of him, that is what we have to try and do this year, take players who have been nowhere and try to make him something."
Matsheke's profile is that of a defender – but Hunt is expected to use him all around the pitch this season as he bloods in youngsters with the experienced campaigners during a season in which Chiefs are unable to register new players.
Amakhosi were banned by FIFA back in February and can only recruit new faces from July 2021, although they can promote from their reserve team.
