The story

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana shot-stopper, Ronwen Williams was one of the five recipients of the Minister's Excellence Award at the SA Sports Awards.

Williams, who was snubbed in the nominations for Sportsman of the Year and Sports Star of the Year accolades, has enjoyed a stellar season with both his club and the national team.

The 32-year-old walked away with Best Goalkeeper award at this year's Africa Cup of Nations tournament in the Ivory Coast, where he captained Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal finish and made history by saving the most penalties (four), in a penalty shoot-up, during the quarter-finals against Cape Verde.

Williams' shot-stopping abilities, his commanding presence in the box and elite distribution skills has been key for Sundowns' defensive efforts this season, seeing the ex-SuperSport United star sign a contract extension at Masandawana that's valid until 2028.

Having already won the league, African Super League and the Nedbank Cup still to contest, it's been an accolade-filled season for the Gqeberha-born keeper.

Mzansi's number one goalkeeper shared the Minister's Excellence Award with seasoned TV presenter/journalist and commentator; flyweight boxing champion Sivenathi Nontshinga; and wheelchair tennis stars: Donald Ramphadi and Kgothatso Montjane.
