The story
Before making their way to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournament, several Mamelodi Sundowns core players had their say on who they think is the best African footballer of all time.
In a short clip posted by The Athletic, club captain Themba Zwane, veteran shot-stopper Denis Onyango and Bafana Bafana stars Thapelo Morena, Teboho Mokoena and Grant Kekana all shared a variety of answers.
Morena and Onyango agreed that it's Chelsea and Ivory Coast's legendary striker, Didier Drogba, citing the goals he scored and the legacy he built in Europe.
"Mshishi", on the other hand, opted for a current player in the form of Liverpool and the Pharaoh's talisman, Mohamed Salah.
After helping Liverpool lift its 20th English top-flight title, scoring 28 goals with 18 assists in the league, 33-year-old Salah is well on his way to becoming Africa’s greatest export to the Premier League.
"The most important part is that he's been consistent," shared Zwane. Meanwhile, Mokoeana named Ivorian midfield legend and former Manchester City powerhouse, Yaya Touré, as his African GOAT.
Kekana went the African football purist route by picking two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner, Egyptian legend Mohamed Aboutreika.
