The story
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele and Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha, two stars from rival clubs, joined forces off the pitch to host the inaugural "Thabo Thalente Games" in their home township of KwaMashu over the Youth Day long weekend.
Both hailing from the G section of KwaMashu in Durban, Cele and Mbatha are excelling in their respective football careers, playing key roles in the midfield for two of the biggest clubs in the country.
Their football journeys began at a young age in KwaMashu, where they played for local clubs before being scouted by top academies and teams.
Now, these talented athletes are providing a platform for young people to showcase their skills, not only in football but also in netball through the Thabo Thalente Games.
The weekend-long sports festival attracted over 500 participants from KwaMashu and surrounding areas, featuring competitions in chess and umlabalaba, all aimed at fostering community and empowering the youth in one of Durban's largest townships.
