The story
Mamelodi Sundowns star forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa was recently awarded by supporters for his exploits in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Brazilian attacker was one of the key figures in Masandawana's campaign in the USA, where the team finished third, just missing out on a place in the knockout rounds of a tournament ultimately won by Premier League giants Chelsea.
Ribeiro's most memorable moment came during the group stage against Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, when he sprinted half the length of the field to score a stunning solo goal that briefly put Sundowns in front in a thrilling 4-3 defeat.
That goal was later nominated for the tournament’s Goal of the Tournament accolade and, thanks to overwhelming fan support, emerged as the winner.
Ribeiro beat out the likes of Lionel Messi, Jamal Musiala, Jhon Arias, Joao Pedro, Reece James and Kenan Yildiz, among other stars, for this accolade, with this CWC undoubtedly putting him on the global map.
