The story
In a move that caught much of the South African football community off guard, this morning Orlando Pirates officially announced Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach.
With José Riveiro opting not to renew his contract at the end of last season, speculation had been mounting over his successor, with many expecting former Mamelodi Sundowns boss Rulani Mokwena to take the reins.
A former Moroccan international centre-back who enjoyed a playing career spanning from 1999 to 2013, Ouaddou began his coaching journey in January last year when he took charge of AS Vita before taking over at Marumo Gallants at the start of the year.
The 46-year-old, who will inherit a coaching staff of Mandla Ncikazi, Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich and Tyron Damons, is set to start his journey on 27 June, when Pirates start their preparations for their upcoming pre-season tour to Spain.
Ouaddou's appointment has drawn plenty of confusion, excitement and scepticism from the Happy People on the Twitter/X timeline, with many having prepared for the club to bring in Rulani as Riveiro's successor.
