After a quiet first stanza, the return from the interval had much more fireworks, as the introduction of Siphamandla Mdunge off the bench by Pirates changed the complexion of the game.

Mdunge eventually won a penalty for the Buccaneers with 18 minutes remaining after he was brought down in the box.

Cassius Spandiel stepped up and made no mistake for Pirates from the spot-kick, as they maintained their one-point lead at the top of the table, although second-placed Cape Town City have a game in hand.

Stellenbosch 1-1 Maritzburg United
