Williams Okpara On CAF Competition

Orlando Pirates Team Manager, Williams Okpara, says playing in the CAF competitions is equivalent to flying the flag of one's country.

The legendary shot-stopper who featured between the sticks when the Buccaneers clinced the 1995 CAF Champions League, highlighted the importance of CAF competitions for both club and country.

"It is about more than just the clubs. This motivation is tremendously different. Playing CAF football for your club is representing the country's flag; it is like a national team," the former goalkeeper said.

"The country is looking to Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town to set an example and they have the responsibility of flying the flag. With four teams, we have a good chance of having one team going very far in the CAF Champions League and one going far in the CAF Confederation Cup," he told Soccer Laduma.

Okpara also spoke on the prospect of having a South African team in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup final respectively.

"Picture one South African club in each CAF final. The PSL's competitiveness is good enough to see that happen. It would be a great achievement for the country and it is highly possible," he concluded.
