The Johannesburg native has emerged as a frontrunner to take over at MC Algiers ahead of the 2025/26 season following the departure of Khaled Ben Yahia. The Tunisian tactician led the side to their ninth Ligue Professionnelle 1 title—securing a third consecutive championship—but the club are now seeking a coach who can deliver success on the continental stage.
This is an area where Mokwena has enjoyed relative success, having guided Mamelodi Sundowns to the African Football League title in 2023/24, as well as consecutive CAF Champions League semi-final appearances in 2022/23 and 2023/24.
Multiple Algerian media outlets have reported the club’s interest in Mokwena. However, according to WinWin, not everyone within the El Mouloudia hierarchy agrees that he is the right man for the job.
While many at the club reportedly acknowledge his strong record in Africa’s premier club competition, there is concern among some executives regarding his conduct during difficult periods. The same report points to his brief stint with Wydad Athletic Club as a red flag, claiming that during his time with the Moroccan giants, he garnered more attention for his controversial remarks than for on-field success.
