During the last two weekends of May, Pyramids and Sundowns will contest African club football’s biggest prize as they face each other in the Champions League final for a second successive season.
The 2023/24 campaign was the first time the Egyptian outfit participated in the continent’s most prestigious club competition. However, they were eliminated in the group stage, first drawing and then suffering defeat to the South African champions during the round-robin phase.
Now, under Krunoslav Jurcic, the North African outfit have taken a massive leap forward, beating the likes of Espérance de Tunis, AS FAR Rabat, and Orlando Pirates on their way to setting up a titanic clash against Miguel Cardoso’s charges.
They could become only the fourth Egyptian team—after Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily—to win the tournament. A man well-versed in Egyptian football, Nelo Vingada, says it is possible for them to cause an upset. The Seabra native has served as the Egyptian national team’s director of football, U20 head coach, and led the White Knights, and he hopes the Cairo-based side can defeat the 2016 African champions.

“The Champions League is the biggest club competition on the continent, and the two teams that qualify for the final have an equal chance of 50/50. I hope Pyramids wins because they represent Egypt, and I wish them success in this great challenge,” the Portuguese tactician told Kooora.
