The reason behind Kaizer Chiefs' first-leg CAF Champions League game not being broadcasted has emerged, with the SABC said to have baulked at Chiefs' R1 million asking price.

Many people were surprised that the first-leg encounter against ASEC Mimosas was not broadcast live on any TV station, including public broadcaster SABC, this despite the fact that both Sundowns and Bidvest Wits had negotiated to have their respective fixtures televised.
A Soccer Laduma source within the SABC's quarters told the Siya crew that the failure to broadcast the match live was due to a disagreement between Chiefs and the SABC around the money the Naturena-based outfit wanted for the broadcasting rights.
"The SABC wanted to buy the rights to broadcast the match live on Saturday at the FNB Stadium, but the money that Chiefs wanted was too much for the SABC," the source explained.
"They wanted over R1 million for just one game and it didn't make business sense because, even with advertising, the company couldn't recover the money for the rights. That's why an agreement could not be reached," the source added.
Chiefs eventually lost the tie 1-0 and now face a daunting task of overturning the deficit as they will be travelling to the Ivory Coast to honour their fixture on Sunday, March 20 at Houphouet Boigny.
