Germany made their way to the final by topping Group G, the so called 'group of death, after beating both Portugal (4-0) and USA (1-0), and drawing 2-2 with Ghana.
The European side then overcame Algeria 2-1 in the Last 16 before beating France 1-0 in the quarter-finals and then impressed all with a 7-1 thumping of hosts Brazil in the semi-final.
Argentina reached the final by topping Group F with nine points after wins over Bosnia Herzegovina (2-1), Iran (1-0) and Nigeria (3-2).
The South Americans then beat Switzerland in the Last 16 and Belgium in the quarter-finals, both by a one goal to nil, before overcoming Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals.
Both sides have key players with Lionel Messi the main protagonist in attack for Argentina with four goals and two assists while Thomas Muller is Germany's top goal scorer with five goals.
The two countries have met in 20 official international matches of which Argentina has won nine times to Germany's six victories with five games ending in draws.
In terms of goals scored in those games both sides have netted 28 apiece.
The first FIFA World Cup Final meeting between the two sides took place at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 29 June 1986, and it was Argentina who emerged victorious, winning the match 3-2 in normal time.
The two teams met in the quarter-finals in the past two World Cups with the Germans winning 4-2 on penalties in 2006 after a 1-1 draw, and 4-0 at the previous World Cup in South Africa.
