UEFA Champions League Report: Barcelona 4-0 Manchester City 19 October 2016

UEFA Champions League Result: Barcelona 4-0 Manchester City Date: 19 October 2016 Venue: Camp Nou Lionel Messi bagged a hat-trick on Wednesday night as Barcelona dismantled Manchester City 4-0 in the Champions League. The Catalans opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Messi netted his first of the night. Andres Iniesta flicked the ball into the six-yard box where it seemed to be going nowhere, but Fernandinho slipped, allowing Messi to pounce and finish. At the other end of the pitch, City threatened to equalise when Nolito picked out Ilkay Gundogan who beat Gerard Pique before trying to squeeze a shot past Marc Andre Ter Stegen, but he made a sharp save. Barca took a one-nil lead into the break, and disaster struck for City shortly after the restart. A mistake from Claudio Bravo saw him pass the ball straight to Luis Suarez. The goalkeeper then tried to race out and challenge the forward but instead tried to block the shot with his hand while outside the area, resulting in a red card for the City gloveman. Messi punished City almost immediately. Kevin De Bruyne lost possession in midfield and Iniesta quickly fed Messi who curled a low shot past Willy Caballero in goal. The Argentine completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute to increase the lead to three goals. John Stones allowed a pass from Gundogan beyond him, and Suarez was quick to react, squaring for Messi to finish. In the last few minutes Barca looked set for a fourth when Messi won a penalty after being fouled by Aleksandar Kolarov, but Caballero pulled off a great save to prevent further damage as he kept out Neymar's spot-kick. However, the Brazilian made up for the miss two minutes later as he fired home after an assist from Messi.
