UEFA Champions League Report: AS Roma 1-7 Bayern Munich 21 October 2014

A ruthless Bayern Munich thrashed AS Roma 7-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in their UEFA Champions League Group E clash on Tuesday night. The Bundesliga side took the lead as early as the ninth minute with a trademark strike from Arjen Robben, who cut in from the right before bending the ball into the far corner. Roma almost leveled matters a minute later, but a fine save from Manuel Neuer denied Gervinho from close range. Bayern doubled their lead in the 23rd minute, as Mario Gotze exchanged passes with Thomas Muller, before firing a low effort into the bottom corner. They added a third two minutes later, as an un-marked Robert Lewandowski headed home from close range after being picked out by Bernat. Robben got his second and Bayern's fourth in the 35th minute with a finish from 10-yards out, after latching onto Lewandowski's through ball. Bayern managed to add a fifth in the 35th minute courtesy of well-taken penalty from Muller. Gervinho came close to pulling a goal back in the 54th minute but his effort from close range crashed against the upright. Roma eventually got their goal 10 minutes later, as Iturbe picked out Gervinho at the near post and the Ivorian made no mistake from six-yards out. Substitute Franck Ribery got his name on the score sheet in the 78th minute with a cheeky lobbed effort, after latching onto a pass from Robben. Fellow substitute, Xherdan Shaqiri, rounded off the scoring seconds after coming on in the 80th minute with a right-footed finish into an empty net, after Rafinha's effort had been spilled by Morgan De Sanctis. Pep Guardiola's side have cemented top spot in Group E, while the Serie A outfit remain in second spot.
