Africa was represented by four giants - Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly, Wydad AC and Esperance - who all fell at the first hurdle of the competition.
While Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance each picked up a victory in the competition, Al Ahly and Wydad failed to register a win in their three group games.
There were 14 goals scored by African players at the competition. Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners netted twice at the tournament, leading the way among South African goalscorers.
Wydad's South African duo of Cassius Mailula and Thembinkosi Lorch grabbed both goals for the Red Castle at the tournament.
Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy managed to score his first goal of the tournament so far against Mamelodi Sundowns before netting a brace against Monterrey on Wednesday morning. He is one of two African players still left in the tournament as of 1 July.
