The round-robin phase of the global spectacle has officially concluded, with Real Madrid and Al Hilal becoming the final two teams to book their spots in the knockout stages of the tournament.

However, there will be no African representation in the Round of 16, as all four of the continent’s participants have been eliminated.

Of the CAF representatives, Mamelodi Sundowns performed the best, falling just one point short of reaching the next stage of the Club World Cup. Their strong showing in the United States of America was largely due to the form of star striker Rayners.

He scored in their 1-0 victory over Ulsan and again in their narrow 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Despite his efforts, the Bafana Bafana international narrowly missed out on breaking into the top five goalscorers after the group stages.

While Ka Bo Yellow do not have a player on the exclusive list, another African side, Al Ahly, does. Wessam Abou Ali’s hat-trick against FC Porto puts him among five players to have scored three goals in North America thus far.

The Club of the Century had lofty expectations heading into their 10th Club World Cup, but ultimately finished bottom of Group A. Still, Abou Ali’s performance against the Portuguese giants will be seen as one of the few positives from their campaign.
