Former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has become the third most expensive transfer in history after completing his move from Napoli to Juventus.

The 28-year-old joined the Serie A champions for a confirmed fee of €90 million (R1.42 billion), which will be paid in two instalments of €45 million (R710 million) over the next two seasons.

Higuain becomes the third most expensive transfer ever, bettered only by Cristiano Ronaldo's €94 million (R1.5 billion) move from Manchester United to Real and Gareth Bale's €101 million (R1.6 billion) world record deal from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Blancos.

Higuain also broke the current Serie A transfer record of €55 million (R865 million), the amount Lazio paid Parma for Hernan Crespo in 2000.
