Earlier this week, the Englishman finalised a high-profile switch to Catalonia, joining the reigning Spanish champions on a season-long loan. Rashford has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford ever since the arrival of Ruben Amorim but now looks set for a reprieve from the intensity of his hometown as he ventures abroad for the first time in his career.
The last player to make a direct move from the record Premier League champions to the Catalan giants was Gerard Pique.
The Spanish centre-back initially left Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy to join United’s first team. However, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic firmly established at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence, Pique struggled for consistent game time. This led United to sell him back to his boyhood club for just €5 million (R103 million) – a bargain considering what was to come.
Back at the Camp Nou, Pique blossomed into a world-class defender under Pep Guardiola, becoming one of the greatest centre-backs of all time and a cornerstone of Barcelona’s golden era.
During his time with the five-time European champions, Pique shared the pitch with a number of stars – including one who also played for Manchester United: Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Swede joined Barcelona in a blockbuster transfer ahead of the 2009/10 campaign. However, despite his technical brilliance and physical dominance, he never fully settled under Guardiola’s regime.

At the end of that season, he was loaned out to AC Milan before later moving on to Paris Saint-Germain – and eventually, Manchester United, where he added a UEFA Europa League title to his glittering CV.
